More Photos of Positano, Italy

One of the most beautiful places I visited while in Italy in June was Positano on the Mediterranean Sea/Amalfi Coast. It could not have been anymore beautiful than I envisioned before arriving at this small town nestled in the side of a mountain that dropped into the sea. It was not only beautiful in the daytime, but also gorgeous at night.

The following are a three daytime images followed by a couple images taken in the evening. They will give you an idea of its spectacular beauty.

In closing, one more image from Positano taken in the early morning when most other people were asleep thereby leaving the small narrow streets to me and my Nikon D700 camera. At any other time of the day or evening, this location was covered with people heading to and from the nearby beach and the piers.

Alleys in the Medieval Town of Cortona

I am slowly making progress through my many images from Italy, and yesterday evening I went back to Cortona in Tuscany–well, not exactly back in person, but to my Cortona images to review those that I had not processed yet. Reviewing the images, brought back many great memories of the mountain top, medieval town.

Through the center of Cortona, there is one main narrow road that is lined with small shops and restaurants. It is used predominately by people (walking), not cars or trucks.

While walking along that road, there were many narrow alleys leading either to the edge of the town or to other shops and residences. They were typically shaded with well lit sections where the sun illuminated parts of the alleys, doorways, or the end of the alley overlooking the Tuscan valley below. I tried to capture their unique beauty. Below are some of those images.

The above image provides a glimpse of the Tuscan valley at the end of an alley. Below is what it looked like from the edge of town overlooking one of the roads that led up to Cortona. I am ready to return in person!

From Positano by Boat to Capri and Back to Positano

While in Italy in June, we stayed in Positano–a small town nestled on the side of a mountain that dropped into the Mediterranean Sea. Positano is gorgeous, and our five days/four nights there were fantastic. One of the days, while staying in Positano, we traveled by boat to Capri, about an hour ride. I recently posted an article and images from Capri, but this evening, I am only posting the images from the boat ride to Capri and the return to Positano.

I have many images from the boat ride to Capri, but I am only posting a few here on my blog. The rest are on my Website. Some are located in the Capri gallery at: http://stabone.com/p564590140, and the others are in the Positano gallery at:  http://stabone.com/p1023285700. The first image (below) was taken with my iPhone as we left Positano. It looked like it was going to rain so I kept my Nikon gear in the bag (big mistake) and used my iPhone. It never rained and began to clear up as we approached Capri. The remainder of the images were taken with my Nikon D700 and a Nikon 28-300mm lens.

The following image was taken as we approached the island of Capri. It can be seen in the distance across the bow of the boat where my two daughters rode with a couple of the people that traveled with us. The Mediterranean Sea was calm and beautiful, at times a deep blue and at other times a brilliant turquoise, and the island of Capri was rugged with mountains and cliffs that dropped into the sea.

Above is a lighthouse on the end of the island. As we rounded the island, there was an old structure/ruin sitting above the water (below image). If you click on the images, you can see them in more detail.

The boat took us close to the shoreline many times to see grottos. A couple are included below.

After spending the day in Capri, we headed back to Positano. My images from Capri can be seen at:  http://stabone.com/p564590140. The following images were taken on the return trip.

Above is one of the many very old towers that lined the coast; although spaced far apart, they were always within sight of each other. They were used to watch for pirates and other intruders. A fire would be lit on the top of the tower to signal to the next tower and eventually the coastal cities.

The above natural rock formation is referred to as the German Soldier (for obvious reasons). The below two images show Positano as we approached the city.

Our hotel could not have been in a much better location. It was the yellow building in the lower right corner of the above image with all of the orange beach  chairs in front of it on the beach.

Reviewing and processing the above and other images this weekend brought back many fabulous memories of not just the sights, but also the food, wine and enjoyment we all experienced in Italy for two weeks. This week, I plan to process and upload my images from Rome and the Vatican, and continue to wish I was back in Italy shooting photos, eating well, and drinking great wine.

Leesylvania State Park Sunrise

On Friday, I went to Leesylvania State Park near our home in Virginia. I posted an article about it on Friday afternoon from my iPhone with a couple of the images taken with my iPhone. It’s amazing what one can do with an iPhone.

Well today, the day after, I processed the images that I took with my Nikon D700 and D300. If you read yesterday’s article, you know that it was a beautiful sunrise and well worth getting up very early. That was validated today, as I reviewed and processed the images I shot with the Nikons. Below are a few of the sunrise images.

Besides the beautiful sunrise, while moving from one end of the park to another, I saw a doe and her twin fawns. The doe was eating grass just beyond the tree line, and the twin fawns were laying down in the grass waiting and watching. At first, I did not see the fawns until they moved. It was the doe, and how she was being lit by the early morning sun, that caught my eye. I do not normally stop to photograph deer in the park, but the sun was illuminating the deer so well that I had to stop the car, dash around to the back and get my camera (D300 and 80-400mm lens), and begin photographing. She let me get closer and closer. Normally, the deer are very skittish and run back into the woods.

When I was within about 75 feet, one by one the two fawns got up and joined the doe. I stopped moving, but kept photographing.

And then, I could not believe how lucky I was, one fawn and then the other began nursing, while I watched and photographed them. When the doe had enough (not necessarily the fawns), she moved back into the woods with the two fawns following close behind.

Before the last fawn took off into the woods, it appeared to be taking care of an issue on its back.

Going to Leesylvania early yesterday turned out to be a fantastic morning: weather perfect and in the low 70s, spectacular colorful sunrise, and an unexpected photographic encounter with a doe and her fawns. What a way to start a long weekend. Great to be healthy and alive to see such sights and share them with you.

Sunrise on the Potomac River

This morning, I got up at 0500, loaded the car and went to Leesylvania State Park just a few miles from bed. I was hoping to photograph the sunrise across the Potomac River. As I was getting closer to the park, I could see a few clouds and color, so I sped up. Fortunately, the park gates were open because it was well before the park’s opening hours.

After entering the park, I drove to the last and furtherest parking lot, quickly exited the car and began unloading my gear and mounted my camera on a tripod. I also attached a handheld shutter release and checked the ISO and set the aperture and shutter speed. Then, I put on my backpack full of gear and hurried through the park to the shoreline.

I was the only person there, not even a fisherman in sight. They too arrive early, but not today. I set up my Nikon D700 with the 24-70mm 2.8, carefully composed the shot, focused and began shooting. The sky was beginning to glow in red, orange, and yellow colors. This was going to be a good morning for capturing an awesome, colorful sunrise.

Below are photos from my iPhone. I will process and upload the Nikon images later. This is an experiment–I am preparing this blog post on my iPhone while waiting for Angela at her therapist appointment. More on that later too.
